08 Jul '14 Marorka team: Formula Student
A member of Marorka’s team, one of our summer interns, Gunnar Ingi Friðriksson, is competing in the Formula Student event in England.
Formula Student is an event organized by The Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE). The event is a racing competition between university teams of engineers. Over a hundred teams from 38 different countries are competing in this year’s event, 9-13 July. For the last 7 years the event has been held at the Silverstone racetrack in the UK and as will it this year.
The event contains to classes to compete in:
- Class 1 where teams have to have fully working cars that fulfil all of the rules (safety rules) set for the competition. Then they compete in both presentation (design, cost and sustainability, and business) and racing (eg. acceleration event, endurance event, skid pad event)
- Class 2 where teams only compete in the presentation part. Typically for those who have designed but not built a car for next year’s competition.
This year’s car is the third car designed by the Icelandic team (Team Spark) from the University of Iceland. It is as well the first car legal for the Class 1 competition. The car is electronic and really beautiful.
The Icelandic team first competed in 2011 and last year it ended up in third place in the Class 2 competition of 25 teams. So this year we have high hopes and are really excited to see the results of this well designed car.
The greatest sponsor of this year’s car are Marel, Teknís and Eimskip but many other companies have sponsored and helped with the making of this car.
We look forward seeing the result and support our team member, Gunnar Ingi Friðriksson in his endeavor.
