Jökulsárlón is a large glacial lake in southeast Iceland which began to form as the glacier receded from the shores of the Atlantic Ocean. The lake is now 1.5 kilometres (0.9 mi) from the ocean’s edge and covers an area of 18 km2 (7 sq mi). It has increased fourfold in size since the 1970s, and recently became the deepest lake in Iceland with a depth of more than 248 metres (814 ft)
In the wake of COP21 in Paris, Marorka is proud to join a consortium of more than 100 Icelandic companies in a Declaration on Climate Change. The initiativeis arranged by the city of Reykjavik and Festa – Icelandic Center for Corporate Social Responsibility. For us at Marorka, it is important to take action to minimize our harmful environmental impact. We are honoured to be assisting the most environmental means of transportation, the shipping industry, to be evenmore energy efficient. We work continuously to minimize harmful emissions, protect the marine environment and reduce the contribution of the shipping industry to global warming.
This year Marorka will be making a donation to Landsbjörg, the Icelandic Association for Search and Rescue (ICE-SAR). The association’s volunteers are readyat any time to man lifeboats and rescue centres all around the country and to assist ships in difficulty in an area covering most of the North Atlantic.
